Building and Opening Reports

In the new Dashboards experience, building and saving reports is a breeze.

Creating a report

There are multiple ways to create a new, blank report:

  • In the top navigation, at the top left of the page, choose the report type you'd like to create from the Reports dropdown. When you create a report from this path, and are ready to save it, you'll need to choose the dashboard where it will live. See below:

  • From a dashboard, at the top right of the page, click "Add Report." Then, when the modal appears, choose the report type from among the options under the "Create New" subheading. When saving the report, you will NOT need to choose a dashboard, since the report will automatically be saved to the dashboard you started from.

Opening existing reports

Opening existing reports is no longer done from the report page itself (e.g. by creating a blank Insights report, then clicking the "Open" button within that report). Instead, existing reports can be opened from the search bar at the top of the Mixpanel page. Simply type in the name of your report, then select it from the list. Search now also displays the dashboard to which the report is saved.

The search function also contains additional filters to help you find a report, if you don't know its exact title. You can filter for reports you've created, reports that are shared with you, as well as for reports of a specific type (e.g. Funnels reports).

Saving reports

Saving reports is optional. If you are building a report to answer a one-off question, or don't see a need to save the report, feel free to simply build it without saving. All reports, even ones that are not saved, can be shared via the "Copy URL" button at the top right of the report.

If you'd like to save the report, you'll need to save it to a dashboard. As noted above, reports created from the top navigation menu will require you to choose a dashboard, whereas reports created from the "Add Report" button inside a dashboard will not. Once you've finished configuring your report (see building Insights, Flows, Funnels, and Retention reports), and are ready to save it, click "Save and Close" at the top right of the report.

Note: You are no longer required to name a report before saving it. If you save a report without a name, it will simply be named "Untitled." To name a report, click the "Untitled" name at the top left of the report, enter your preferred title, then press Enter. Finally, click "Save and Close" to save the new name, along with any other changes you've made. Reports can also be renamed from the dashboard view, by selecting "Rename" from the report's dashboard card's overflow menu.

Understanding the dashboard ↔ report relationship

Since all saved reports live on at least one dashboard, we've made it easy to determine which dashboard. At the top left of any saved report, breadcrumbs display the dashboard to which the copy of the report you're viewing is saved.

Clicking the dashboard breadcrumb will open a menu that lists all the dashboards to which the report is saved. Note that the first dashboard to which a report is saved is considered the original. Additional copies of the report that live on other dashboards will also be updated whenever you save changes to the original.
