Depending on the date range of the saved report, Daily retention buckets default to either 1, 7, 14, and 28 days or 1, 14, 28, and 56 days. Whichever of 28 days and 56 days is closer to the date range span will be the respective default bucketing we choose.
A date range totaling 20 days or 40 days will be bucketed as 1, 7, 14, and 28.
A date range totaling 50 days or 200 days will be bucketed as 1, 14, 28, 56.
All buckets are multiples of 7 days in order to compare consistent days of the week (e.g., compare Saturdays to Saturdays and Mondays to Mondays).
Weekly and Monthly Retention
Weekly and monthly retention buckets are defaulted to 1, 3, 6, and 12 weeks and 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, respectively.
Day (hourly addiction): 2, 8, 16, 24 hours.
Week (daily addiction): 2, 3, 5, 7 days.
Month (daily addiction): 2, 10, 20, 30 days.
Rows in Addiction are either complete or incomplete - they do not have some columns that are complete and others that are not. Only the most recent cohort is not complete. We thus take the following rows for “current” (orange) and “previous” (gray) data in all buckets:
Defining the cohorts
The retention card displays the most recent complete bucket for each cohort.
Daily retention displays 7 squares directly above the orange square used (in order to compare Saturdays to Saturdays and Mondays to Mondays).
Weekly/Monthly retention uses the square directly above the most recent cohort displayed.
The below photo shows 1 and 7 day retention buckets that are used and then how they are depicted in the dashboard.
